PepsiCo Employees Volunteer at Nexus

Earlier this month, a team of volunteers from PepsiCo came out to the Nexus campus as part of the company’s annual Day of Caring! This year, the volunteers helped build shelving for the new philanthropy office and grill chicken sandwiches for both clients and staff. Despite the rainy weather that day, the PepsiCo team was able to help us around campus while having a great time giving back. We greatly appreciate everything PepsiCo does for Nexus!

Juanita Finds a Life Worth Living

Juanita Alvarez has been in recovery since March 4, 2019. Before finding her way to Nexus Recovery Center, Juanita says that her life was unmanageable, and hope was a distant concept. She faced overwhelming challenges that seemed insurmountable. “I basically had no life skills other than street life knowledge,” she says. “I had no self-worth, low self-esteem, and I felt nonexistent.”

During her time at Nexus, Juanita participated in all of the programs she could, and discovered the love, compassion, and support she needed. Nexus equipped her with essential coping and life skills and introduced her to Narcotics Anonymous (NA). “I am so grateful for all the tools Nexus has helped me with, says Juanita. “I was able to establish a relationship with my children, sisters, and reconnect with people who genuinely wanted the best for me.”

Today, Juanita serves as a Recovery Support Peer Specialist at Nexus, providing guidance and support to others on their recovery journeys. “I never thought I would have a job at the very place I came to get help,” she says. “Now I work here. I get to be a part of a great organization and impact the lives of many women and children!” Looking ahead, Juanita plans to pursue a college degree for Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) and work towards her Mental Health Peer Specialist (MHPS) Certification.

“Nexus gave me a life worth living,” Juanita says. “I love the fact that my leader and sponsor give me so much motivation to be the best version of myself every day. Thank you, Nexus, for all the support and being an important part of my story.”

Volunteer with Nexus This Holiday Season!

The holiday season is rapidly approaching, and we are looking for volunteers to help us serve holiday meals to our residential clients. This year, we are serving a full-course traditional Thanksgiving Meal prepared by Chef to the Shelters, including turkey, stuffing, green beans, broccoli, candied yams, mashed potatoes, cakes, and pies. Christmas and New Years meals are in the works, but we are looking for volunteers as well. If you are interested in lending a hand, please email Cynthia Juarez at cjuarez@nexusrecovery.org.
