It’s September, and there’s a lot going on at Nexus Recovery Center, as we celebrate National Recovery Month and North Texas Giving Day. In this month’s newsletter, we feature the new ramp entrance to the Nexus Business Office, which will improve safety and accessibility on campus. We also highlight the voter registration drive that we did for Internation Women’s Day, and check in with Nexus alum and staff member Mackenzie, recounting her recovery journey through the darkest days of the pandemic. Finally, we encourage you to be #NexusStrong as we raise money for Nexus through North Texas Giving Day, running now through September 21!

New Business Office Ramp Improves Safety and Accessibility
Nexus recently replaced the ramp and stairs leading into the Business Office. The old entrances, dating from the 1990s, were starting to degrade, posing a hazard to Nexus staff as well as clients and visitors. In addition, the ramp had settled by several inches, making it less accessible to those with mobility issues. Thanks to our generous donors for allowing us to make necessary upgrades like this. Please join us in promoting campus safety by being #NexusStrong this North Texas Giving Day!

Nexus Celebrates International Women’s Day with Voter Registration
Nexus celebrated Women’s Equality Day last month, commemorating the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote across the US. In the spirit of women’s suffrage, Recovery Advocate Dori DeMay ran a voter registration table so that staff could make sure that they’re eligible to vote this fall. Please donate now to our North Texas Giving Day page to help support staff engagement events like this in the future!

Mackenzie Finds a Home at Nexus
Mackenzie and her son Zayden came to Nexus in June 2020 after Mackenzie lost her job and her home because of COVID. While at Nexus, Mackenzie and her son got the help they needed to rebuild their lives, including basic needs and trauma-informed counseling. Three years later, Mackenzie and Zayden are thriving, and Mackenzie now works at Nexus in our Recovery Support Services department.
Nexus serves thousands of women like Mackenzie every year, as well as hundreds of children like Zayden. This Recovery Month, we celebrate the strength of each and every one of our clients, and invite you to be #NexusStrong as part of North Texas Giving Day!
