Swift Action from our Partners during Recent Storms

As we reflect on the recent dangerous storms North Texas recently experienced, we are grateful all Nexus clients and their children remained safe during the 36-hour power outage on our campus because of the swift actions of our staff, supporters, and partners.

The large trees on our campus sustained damage during the storms but were trimmed to prevent further damage to our buildings.

Nexus Board Members and local supporters came to the rescue with their generous donations of non-perishable food, flavored waters, battery-operated lights and fans, board games, and more.

Lonnie Sorrells with Ben E. Keith Company coordinated a refrigerated truck to save the perishable food we had on hand. Our General Contractor, MAPP, architect firm HKS, and Pritchard & Associates, our Owner’s Representative, sourced multiple generators.

Our partners have truly gone above and beyond to assist us and we are deeply grateful. Thank you!

Evernorth Health Services Empowers Nexus Recovery Center

Recently, the Nexus Recovery Center campus received a heartwarming visit from members of the Evernorth Health Services technology leadership team. This visit not only left a lasting impact on the team, but also illuminated the transformative power of volunteering and community engagement.

Courtney Rottman, a Nexus Board Member and representative of Evernorth Health Services, shared her sentiments about the experience, stating, “It was an honor for members of the Evernorth Health Services technology team to visit the Nexus Recovery Center campus and serve the inspiring women and children who temporarily make the campus their home. As a group of leaders who primarily work behind the scenes in healthcare, we often do not get to directly interact with individuals and families who are facing healthcare challenges, unless it is in our own personal lives. The visit to Nexus and the opportunity to interact with some of the clients left an indelible impression on each of us and we are inspired to do more for women in recovery, especially at Nexus.”

Evernorth Health Services, the health services business of Cigna Corporation (NYSE: CI), is a global leader in healthcare and recognizes the importance of supporting initiatives that promote wellness and recovery. Twice a year, the Evernorth technology leadership team embarks on a retreat that includes a service event. This year, they chose Nexus as the beneficiary of their service efforts, demonstrating a commitment to giving back to the community.
During their visit to Nexus, the Evernorth team rolled up their sleeves and worked in the campus kitchen, contributing their time and energy to support the center’s mission of providing comprehensive addiction recovery services. Through their hands-on involvement, they not only provided practical assistance but also fostered meaningful connections with the women and children at Nexus.

The collaboration between Evernorth Health Services and Nexus exemplifies the power of partnership in driving positive change. Their partnership with Nexus stands as a shining example of corporate social responsibility in action.

From Darkness to Light: A Journey of Recovery

In a candid interview, Misty R. shares her journey of overcoming addiction and rebuilding her life. Just nine months into her recovery journey, Misty’s story is a testament to the transformative power of resilience and perseverance.

Reflecting on her past, Misty recalls a life marked by sadness and an endless pursuit of something elusive. “Before entering residential treatment at Nexus, my life was a blur of chasing highs and searching for something I could never find,” she confesses.

Misty’s path to recovery took a decisive turn when she arrived at Nexus on June 1, 2023, after being released from jail. Guided by the support of a church from Longview, Misty embarked on a journey of self-discovery and healing. She enrolled in the Adult Women program at Nexus, where she spent 28 days learning a new routine and gaining invaluable insights into her journey towards sobriety.

Transitioning into the MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment) program and subsequently moving into the Sisterhood transitional living program marked significant milestones in Misty’s recovery journey. Despite the challenges of being on probation in two different counties, Misty remained steadfast in her commitment to her recovery. Completing Intensive Outpatient treatment (IOP), staying connected with recovery support services, and maintaining regular contact with her MAT counselor were all integral parts of Misty’s recovery journey.

Embracing a holistic approach to recovery, Misty actively participates in various support groups and therapy sessions. She credits her progress to her dedication to working the 12 steps of DAA (Drug Addicts Anonymous), guided by a sponsor who supported her through completing her 12th step.

Perhaps the most heartwarming aspect of Misty’s story is her renewed relationships with her children and their father, whom she had been separated from since 2015. Today, Misty is employed at a farmers market on weekends and works full-time during the week. Her future aspirations include securing her own apartment, staying on her path of recovery, and continuing her service work to help other women find the same sense of hope and fulfillment she has discovered.

In expressing her gratitude, Misty acknowledges the unwavering support of Nexus, the MAT program, her caseworker at Sisterhood Zenovia, the RSS (Recovery Support Services) team, her family, and, most importantly, her higher power, God. Through her journey of redemption, Misty’s story serves as a beacon of hope for those navigating their own paths to recovery.

Strong Like a Mother!

The statistics are sobering: 8.7 million children live in households where at least one parent battles a substance use disorder. Over the past two decades, the number of children entering foster care due to parental substance use has more than doubled. These figures underscore the harsh reality of substance use disorders, which not only impact individuals but also disrupt the lives of millions of children nationwide. Separating mothers from their children during substance use disorder (SUD) treatment can exacerbate these challenges, hindering both maternal well-being and healthy child development.

In the face of these daunting statistics, Nexus stands as a beacon of hope. Our family-centered treatment approach aims to transform the lives of women and children impacted by SUDs. We offer comprehensive and holistic programs that allow women to embark on the path to recovery without being separated from their children. This approach is not only compassionate but also recognizes the critical role that maternal presence plays in the healing process.

Mothers in recovery are not just recipients of treatment; they are active participants, contributing to their own healing journey with strength and resilience. Their determination to overcome addiction and create a better life for themselves and their children is nothing short of inspiring. These mothers embody the spirit of resilience, demonstrating that they are #stronglikeamother.
