Celebrating Charles Schwab during Volunteer Appreciation Month
At Nexus, we know that creating lasting change takes a village, and this Volunteer Appreciation Month, we are honored to recognize Charles Schwab for their incredible contributions to our mission. Their commitment to community service has not only made a tangible impact but has also demonstrated the power of corporate volunteerism in transforming lives.
Last fall, Nexus was selected to participate in Charles Schwab’s 2nd annual BTS Community Impact Challenge, a “flash consulting” initiative that brings together passionate Schwabbies to help nonprofits tackle critical challenges. For Nexus, the challenge focused on reducing transportation barriers for our outpatient clients across DFW—many of whom face long and complicated commutes to access treatment. Schwab’s expertise and insights for this project will ensure that more women in recovery have reliable access to the services they need.
But their support didn’t stop there. This year, as part of Schwab Volunteer Week, their team is rolling up their sleeves once again—this time by helping in our kitchen and participating in a beautification project to enhance our campus. Their commitment to community service has not only made a tangible impact but has showcased how corporate volunteerism can transform lives.
From the consulting room to the kitchen, from strategy sessions to hands-on service, Charles Schwab has shown up for Nexus in meaningful ways. Their generosity, expertise, and dedication to making a difference will have a lasting impact on the lives of our clients and their families.

Nexus is Gifted Narcan Vending Machines to Help Combat Overdoses
Nexus is honored to receive the donation of two Narcan vending machines — a critical and life-saving resource in the fight against opioid overdoses. These machines, beautifully painted by artist Virginia Lindsay, provide free and accessible Narcan to the public. Also known as Naloxone, Narcan rapidly reverses the effects of opioid overdoses, helping restore normal breathing for individuals whose breathing has slowed or stopped due to opioid use.
These machines arrive at a pivotal time. As part of Texas’ statewide “One Pill Kills” campaign, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) recently launched an interactive online map pinpointing locations — including vending machines — where residents can access Naloxone. The initiative is supported by the Texas Overdose Data to Action program (TODA), which identified that access and awareness of Naloxone was a major barrier to overdose prevention across the state.
🔹 A 2024 report by Texas DSHS showed a nearly 20% decrease in fentanyl-related poisoning deaths, with at least 430 fewer Texans dying compared to the previous year. This marks a turning point after five years of increases, during which fentanyl-related deaths rose more than 600% from 2019 to 2023.
🔹 Despite progress, many regions—particularly rural West Texas—remain resource deserts, where access to tools like Naloxone is limited due to systemic inequalities and geographic barriers. TODA is working with Naloxone Texas and local paramedicine teams to expand distribution in these areas.
🔹 Opioids account for over 70% of drug-related deaths nationwide, with fentanyl remaining the deadliest.
🔹 Texas had one of the highest overdose death rates in 2022, with more than 5,000 lives lost, including nearly 800 opioid-related deaths in North Texas alone.
Narcan is more than a medication—it’s a second chance. It buys precious time, allowing individuals to receive life-saving medical attention and begin their path toward recovery.
This meaningful initiative was made possible by the tireless efforts of Anthony Delabano and Conscience Conduit, in partnership with Livegy, who have transformed these Narcan vending machines into powerful public art pieces. Their work not only provides physical aid but also sparks critical conversation, reduces stigma, and increases public awareness around overdose prevention.
Nexus is deeply grateful for this donation. It reflects a shared commitment to saving lives, building safer communities, and supporting individuals on their journey to recovery.

A Journey of Transformation: Sarah’s Story
For Sarah, the road to recovery began 11 years ago at Nexus. She had a loving and supportive family, but after the tragic loss of her best friend at age 15, Sarah turned to alcohol to cope. What started as teenage drinking quickly spiraled into substance dependence, leading her to a long struggle with substance use disorder.
“I knew I had a problem early on because I couldn’t stop myself,” Sarah recalls. “I desperately wanted to be sober for years, but I didn’t think I could do it.” After facing countless rock bottoms—including jail time, broken relationships, and losing jobs—Sarah finally made the life-changing decision to seek treatment at Nexus.
At Nexus, Sarah found not only the professional help she needed but also a supportive community of women who understood her struggles. “At first, it was scary because I didn’t know what to expect, but once I started feeling better, I honestly loved Nexus. I finally felt that I was not alone,” she says. “Being in a women-only treatment facility was essential for me—I wouldn’t have been able to do a co-ed program.”
Through the detox and residential treatment programs, Sarah regained hope and reconnected with her true self. She credits Nexus with completely transforming her life and restoring her relationships with her family. “My parents and sister got the real me back. My nephews have never known the person I used to be. That is a miracle.”
Today, Sarah has come full circle—she now works at Nexus as a counselor in the Adult Women’s program, providing a safe space for women in recovery. “It was always a dream of mine to work at the place that saved my life and help women start their own healing journey.”
Looking to the future, Sarah plans to earn her LPC license. She also cherishes time with her nephews and serves as a caretaker for her parents. “Because of my recovery, I get to be fully present for my family. That is something I never imagined before.”
