The holidays mean gathering with loved ones around a table or tree, sharing gifts and laughter amid the warm glow of lights, celebrating joy and togetherness. Year after year, we create happy memories that we cherish, while looking forward to making new ones. For women and children in recovery, this often marks their first chance to establish traditions and joyful memories.
Marsha remembers one truly joyful Christmas from her childhood. “We had a huge tree so tall we couldn’t put a star on top, and presents were everywhere. It was the only Christmas we were all together. Soon after, my father went to prison and my mother slipped into addiction, changing our lives forever.” As Marsha grew up, she faced struggles of her own, ultimately turning to alcohol and substances. After years of hardship and becoming pregnant while homeless, she reached out for help.
Through Ms. Derisa, a Linkage Specialist with Nexus’ Pregnant and Parenting Women with Children (PPWC) program, Marsha found guidance. “My situation was terrifying and I knew I couldn’t do it alone. Ms. Derisa helped me learn about my disease, and about regulating my emotions.” After completing Nexus’ 90-day residential treatment, she secured a spot in a program for mothers experiencing homelessness, thanks to her Recovery Coach, Ms. Steffany.
Recently, Marsha moved into her own apartment and got a job. “Sitting in my own apartment, being able to pay my bills, feels humbling. I’ve learned coping skills and how to love myself. It all started at Nexus.”
The best gift of all was reuniting with her daughter, Phoenix. “Watching her sleep safely in our home fills me with gratitude. She gives me life,” Marsha shares.
Marsha is looking forward to Christmas for the first time in years and shares, “I want to light up my daughter’s eyes with a small tree and watch her little feet kick with glee.”
In the past year, Nexus has provided Marsha and over 3,365 women like her the chance to rebuild their lives. For over 53 years, Nexus has served as a community of hope and recovery for women and their families striving for healthy, resilient lives.
As we head into this season of giving, please consider a gift to Nexus Family Recovery Center so our mothers in recovery can gift their children bright futures filled with countless happy memories.
Warmly,
Heather Ormand | Chief Executive Officer
