Nexus Staff Rally for North Texas Giving Day…plus a HUGE announcement!
It’s finally here—North Texas Giving Day, the nation’s largest 18-hour online giving extravaganza, has arrived! This year, Nexus Family Recovery Center is charging full throttle to raise $150,000 for services and programs that empower women in recovery and their families.
To kick off this thrilling campaign, Nexus staff hosted a high-energy pep rally with the electrifying theme #NexusStrong, where team members rallied around our beloved Nexie mascot, snapped photos, and got temporary tattoos. The excitement reached new heights when CEO Heather Ormand announced that if we hit our $150,000 goal on September 19, she’ll #FlexForNexus and get a real tattoo! Let’s make it happen!

Nexus Recovery Center Embraces New Identity as Nexus Family Recovery Center
Nexus Recovery Center, a prominent nonprofit organization with a rich 53-year history, is announcing an exciting new chapter in its evolution. The organization has officially adopted a new name—Nexus Family Recovery Center. This strategic rebranding reflects the organization’s expanded mission and commitment to providing comprehensive, family-centered care.
Founded initially as a female-only alcohol use disorder treatment program, Nexus has undergone significant growth and transformation. Over the past three decades, Nexus has introduced broadened its scope and introduced several key programs, including the Pregnant Parenting Women with Children program (PPWC), the Child Development Center (CDC), Medical Detox, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), and Recovery Support Services (RSS.)
Today, Nexus stands as a full-spectrum substance use disorder (SUD) treatment center dedicated to supporting not only women but entire families affected by SUDs. Despite this comprehensive approach, the previous name did not fully convey the breadth of services offered or the family-centered nature of the organization’s mission. In response to these challenges and to better align with its mission and highlight the support it provides to families, the organization has been renamed Nexus Family Recovery Center.

Recovery Month and Recovery Support Services
National Recovery Month, established in 1989, is observed every September to celebrate and advance evidence-based treatment and recovery practices. This annual event highlights the strength and resilience of the recovery community, as well as the dedication of service providers and local communities that support and facilitate recovery in all its forms.
The Recovery Support Services (RSS) program at Nexus is celebrating Recovery Month throughout September with the theme “Rooted in Recovery” and will include a variety of activities and events including a Purple Out Parade, an annual Recovery Carnival with games, food, and live music, Recovery’s Got Talent Show for all clients and staff, the 8th Annual Recovery Month Picnic, a creative Sip and Doodle activity, and a Special National Recovery Month-themed Outpatient Graduation and Pep Rally ceremony!
These #RecoveryMonth activities will celebrate and recognize women in recovery plus give an opportunity for our staff, current clients, and outpatients to come together with their families to focus on the four major dimensions of recovery: health, home, purpose, and community.

Shannon’s Story of Breaking the Cycle of Substance Abuse
Meet Shannon, a vibrant 50-year-old whose life has been transformed over the past 15 years, 8 months, and 3 days of sobriety since her clean date of December 5, 2008. Hailing from Garland, Texas, Shannon’s journey began in Fort Lauderdale, where she faced the dual challenges of substance use disorder (SUD) and raising her young daughter after a traumatic event at 16.
Shannon’s turning point came when she lost custody of her daughter to CPS. Determined to turn her life around and reclaim her role as a mother, Shannon found Nexus Family Recovery Center, thanks to a recommendation from a relative.
Shannon credits Nexus with helping her break the cycle of SUD and become a better parent. Today, she is happily married to a man with 32 years of sobriety, and her daughter is a remarkable young woman with a 4.5 GPA, set to graduate with her associate’s degree before completing high school. Shannon’s involvement in the community and her continued support of Nexus include donations in honor of her late father. She owns a successful family business and remains actively engaged in NA, traveling globally to speak at events and share her story.
Shannon shares, “Thank God Nexus was there to help me and keep my daughter safe,” she says. “It gave us the tools to break the cycle of substance abuse and build a better future.”
