Rise Up
$1.25M Grant to Expand Access to Recovery for Women and Children at Nexus
We’re proud to announce that Nexus Family Recovery Center has been awarded a $1.25 million grant from the Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) in support of our Phase 2 Recovery Rising campaign. This transformative investment will help fund a new dormitory for Pregnant and Parenting Women with Children (PPWC) and a dedicated Child Development Center (CDC), two vital additions to our 11-acre campus that will support recovery for more than 7,000 women and children every year.
This grant is part of a larger $9.7 million effort by CFT to expand access to health services across North Texas. Nexus was one of several local nonprofits selected for their commitment to improving health outcomes for underserved communities. At Nexus, that means helping moms recover from substance use disorders with their children by their side, offering a safe place to heal, grow, and stay together.
“Parental substance use is the reason for 68% of child removals in Texas,” said Heather Emmanuel Ormand, CEO of Nexus. “We believe that when mothers are given the chance to recover with their children, entire families have the opportunity to thrive. This grant helps make that possible.”
In addition, thanks to a generous matching opportunity from CFT, every donation to Nexus will be doubled up to $1,000 per donor now through Thursday, July 31. That means your support will have twice the impact in helping families on their path to recovery.

In partnership with Nexus staff, members help lead donor engagement, secure artistic contributions, and steward relationships with art donors. Their goal is to ensure every installation reflects the campaign’s core themes of healing, peace, empowerment, and recovery.
The committee recently gathered for a kickoff meeting and a first look at artistic opportunities in the newly opened Doswell Medical Building. Their early reflections emphasized using calming and non-triggering themes, exploring client-created work, and planning art features for both spiritual and functional spaces. Future phases will expand across our 11-acre campus, with walkways, bike paths, and interactive installations designed to tell a powerful story of recovery.
We are grateful to this inspiring group for helping us bring the Recovery Rising vision to life through art that comforts, connects, and celebrates the journey to healing.

A Story of Resilience and Renewal: Angelia’s Journey to Recovery
Angelia’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when recovery is met with compassion, structure, and support. Her journey with Nexus began nearly a decade ago, but today she is not only thriving in her own recovery, she’s also helping others begin theirs.
Angelia first came to Nexus eight years ago and though her initial stay was short-lived, everything changed when she gave birth to her son and made the courageous decision to return to Nexus and commit fully to the recovery process.
Through the Pregnant and Parenting Women with Children (PPWC) program, Angelia found the support she needed to reunite with her child and begin again. She credits Nexus for teaching her life-changing coping tools and for creating a space free of distractions where she could focus on herself. “Nexus is a sisterhood,” Angelia says. “It gave me the strength to change my story.”
Since completing treatment, Angelia has worked hard to rebuild her life. She restored relationships with her mother and five children, became an active member and Vice Chair of her Oxford House chapter, and continued to pursue professional goals. In a full-circle moment, Angelia joined Nexus this year as our Admissions Receptionist, welcoming new clients into the same supportive environment that once welcomed her.
Her impact doesn’t stop there. Angelia also served as the featured speaker at the 2025 Mothers’ Brunch & Bazaar, sharing her testimony with hundreds of supporters and inspiring others with her story of resilience, faith, and determination.
“I want to motivate other women to believe that they can recover too,” she says. “Nexus gave me the tools and the confidence to become the person I was meant to be.”
