Nexus Advocates for Substance Use Disorder Recovery at the Texas Capitol
On Tuesday, February 11, Nexus Family Recovery Center staff, alumni, Board members, and supporters traveled to the Texas State Capitol in Austin for an inspiring and impactful Lobby Day. The event brought together advocates dedicated to championing the prevention, treatment, and recovery of substance use disorders (SUD) for individuals and families across Texas.
Throughout the day, Nexus representatives met with state legislators and policymakers, sharing powerful stories of recovery and advocating for meaningful policy changes to improve SUD services statewide. The focus of this year’s Lobby Day included three critical priorities:
- Strengthening the workforce by expanding and sustaining recovery resources to meet growing needs.
- Securing funding and ensuring access to essential services for individuals and families affected by SUD.
- Protecting individual rights and advocating for safeguards for those on the journey to recovery.
Nexus is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of SUD policy in Texas. The organization’s continued advocacy reinforces its commitment to building healthier, more resilient communities and creating a brighter future for all Texans impacted by substance use disorders.
Stay tuned for more updates on Nexus’s efforts to drive positive change and support lasting recovery!

Dallas Junior Police Academy Inspires Youth at Nexus
Nexus Family Recovery Center recently had the privilege of hosting the Doug Woodham Dallas Junior Police Academy (Dallas JPA) for an inspiring and educational event. The visit showcased Dallas JPA’s commitment to guiding young individuals toward becoming law-abiding citizens through collaboration with local law enforcement and community organizations.
During the event, participants had the unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the operations of the Dallas Police Department. Engaging, hands-on experiences with specialized units—including the dynamic K-9 Squad and innovative Drone Unit—offered invaluable insights into public safety and law enforcement.
The missions of Nexus and Dallas JPA align seamlessly, with both organizations dedicated to promoting healthy, resilient lives and encouraging young people to make positive choices. Nexus extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dallas JPA for their dedication to “Making Better Choices” and for inspiring the next generation through meaningful community engagement.

A Journey of Hope: Lakeesha’s Story of Recovery
At Nexus Family Recovery Center, every story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of recovery. This month, we are honored to share Lakeesha’s story—a beautiful reminder of the impact your support has on individuals and families.
Growing up in Cleburne, Texas, Lakeesha had a childhood marked by both love and hardship. Witnessing abuse in her home and struggling with her parents’ separation, she began using marijuana at 15. Her substance use disorder (SUD) escalated over the years, leading to homelessness and a deep sense of loss. Her turning point came when her mother called, urging her to seek help at Nexus.
Lakeesha has been in and out of Nexus ten times. Despite relapses, Nexus remained a constant source of support, offering grace, accountability, and unwavering love. “Nexus was always like family to me,” Lakeesha shared. “They always had an open-arms love that made me feel safe and gave me a place to fight to get clean.”
During her time at Nexus, Lakeesha engaged in various classes and programs, learning valuable life skills and discovering that she was much more than her SUD. “I learned that I can live a life without drugs,” she said.
Today, Lakeesha is 37 years old and has been sober for 30 months. She cherishes her renewed relationship with her mother and her two children. She recently worked as a Chemical Dependency Tech at Homeward Bound Inc., finding purpose in helping others on their recovery journey.
Her dream? To one day work at Nexus and inspire other women to believe that they, too, can overcome SUD and lead a fulfilling life.
Lakeesha extends heartfelt gratitude to Nexus supporters and says, “Nexus saved my life, and I know it will save many others and families. Please continue to help Nexus so that people like me always know there is a place that will love you until you can learn to love yourself.”
