Demetra Shows Up to Help Others

This month, we highlight Demetra Bookman Hightower, a Nexus alumna who frequently volunteers for our fundraising events. Demetra is 54 years old and has been in recovery for 21 months. Before coming to Nexus to treat her substance use disorder (SUD), Demetra says that “I used all day, every day.” Her life was miserable and out of control, and she could not take care of her children because of her substance use.

Demetra enrolled in the Outpatient Program at Nexus, where she made sure to show up every day. She frequently shared her story in group sessions, which she found was a helpful outlet to express her emotions. She listened to her sponsor, remained honest, and just continued to show up. Demetra is thankful for the chance she’s been given, and very proud of herself for where she is today. Despite dealing with relapse, she considers it all part of her story.

“I am so grateful for Nexus,” Demetra says. “Every time I go to Nexus, I can see myself in the ladies there.”

Today Demetra works in home health care and drives for Lyft. She has two children: a daughter who is 36 and a son who is 20 years old. Demetra also has three granddaughters ages 12, 7, and 1 who she can now be there for. Demetra’s life is going well, and she wants to continue to do what she’s doing: taking recovery one day at a time, reaching out to newcomers, and most importantly, helping herself to be able to help others.

Nexus Children Celebrate the Holidays with the Auxiliary

Last month, the Auxiliary of Nexus hosted a holiday party for the kids in our Child Development Center. Santa stopped by to talk to the children about their holiday wishes as Nexus auxiliary members, volunteers, and staff passed out toys to the excited kids. To those who came out to make the holidays bright for families in recovery, we say a heartfelt thank you! See the gallery below for pictures from this event.

Sherry Lane Place Collects Gifts for Nexus Children

CBRE’s Sherry Lane Place hosted an Angel Tree last month to collect holiday toys for the children of Nexus. The tree was decorated with angel ornaments, with each angel representing a child’s wish and a shared commitment to making a difference. We are grateful to the staff and tenants of Sherry Lane Place for fostering hope and spreading joy for the children of Nexus Recovery Center!
