Doswell Foundation Donates $4 Million to Nexus Recovery Center for Medical Building

DALLAS – January 26, 2023 – Nexus Recovery Center has received a generous $4 million grant from the Doswell Foundation toward building a new medical facility on the Nexus campus. Scheduled to break ground in 2023, the Doswell Medical Building will allow Nexus to further its mission of serving as a community of hope and recovery for all women and their families who strive to live healthy, resilient lives. The Doswell Medical Building will be the crown jewel in a larger, much needed plan to serve clients with security, dignity, and community support.

With the dramatic increase of fentanyl use in the DFW Metroplex, the Doswell Medical Building will allow Nexus to expand its industry-leading harm-reduction services, helping Nexus staff to medically assess the healthcare needs of every woman and their child coming in for services. Replacing the existing Doswell Detox Center, the building’s placement along La Prada Drive will provide immediate access for new and outpatient clients while creating a private entrance to improve the safety of women and children living on campus.

The Doswell Medical Building will host client admissions, acting as a centralized entry point for all clients and visitors to Nexus. The building will also house Nexus’ industry-leading Medicated Assisted Treatment program, a Campus Medical Room for both outpatient and inpatient clients, as well as physician exam rooms for Nexus’ Medical Director, Nurse Practitioners, UT Southwestern Psychiatric Fellows, and Parkland Obstetric Residency Rotation. Finally, the Doswell Medical Building will feature the Rebecca Crowell Medical Detox wing, a state-of-the-art 16-bed medical detox facility named for former Nexus CEO Rebecca Crowell.

The generosity of the Doswell Foundation and preliminary plans for the Doswell Medical Building have served as a catalyst for a more expansive long-term campus plan. Nexus has partnered with HKS Architects to determine what the entire campus could be in the future. Originally built as a men’s bible college in the 1960s, the current Nexus campus has steep stairways, cramped, narrow and small spaces, a lack of storage, and an absence of light and green space that are not optimal to women and children in recovery.

“The Doswell Foundation has supported Nexus for many years, believing in its dedicated mission of recovery for each and every woman entering treatment,” says Beverly Fricke, Chairman and CEO of the Doswell Foundation. “The Doswell Medical Building will be the keystone to Nexus’ long-term future and the beginning of a new life for the women and their children who enter the program. Our investment in Nexus demonstrates our shared belief in compassionate care in an up-to-date facility and program, thus restoring dignity to the women and their children who have trusted Nexus with their journey toward turning their lives around.”

About the Doswell Foundation

The Doswell Foundation was founded in 2008 by Florence Annette Doswell, an independent businesswoman and a proud Texan. Her charm and adventuresome spirit made her stand out as a unique, one-of-a kind woman.

In 2008, Florence contributed $3MM to Texas Woman’s University (TWU) to build an 8-story facility on their Dallas Southwestern Medical District campus to house TWU’s School of Nursing, named the Houston J. And Florence A. Doswell School of Nursing. At the time, the gift was the second largest single gift from an individual in TWU’s history. As a result of Florence’s compassion for education and nursing, a $3.6MM endowment providing for two endowed faculty chairs at the TWU School of Nursing followed and was awarded. Also in 2008, Florence awarded UT Southwestern a $2MM endowment to establish the Houston J. And Florence A. Doswell Center for the Development of New Approaches for the Treatment of Hypertension. Over the years, and until her death in 2012 at the age of 100, she generously supported multiple nonprofits and charitable organizations in her beloved State of Texas.

The Doswell Foundation continues Florence’s “Legacy of Thoughtful Giving” supporting a wide selection of nonprofits and charities each year. Some of these include The Bridge, Dallas Casa, Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, Hope Cottage, Nexus, The Salvation Army, TexProtects and continued support of Texas Woman’s University.
