Road Trip to Recovery! Nexus Plans a Lobby Day at the Texas Capitol!
Nexus is journeying to Austin for an inspiring and impactful day at the Texas State Capitol! This annual gathering unites advocates to champion the prevention, treatment, and recovery of substance use disorders (SUD) for individuals and families across Texas.
Taking place on Tuesday, February 11, the event provides an opportunity for Nexus staff, alumni, Board members, committee members, and supporters to meet with their Representatives and Senators in small groups. Together, they will share powerful stories of recovery and advocate for meaningful policy changes to improve SUD services in Texas.
This year’s Lobby Day is focused on shaping the future of SUD policy in Texas by addressing three critical priorities:
- Strengthening the workforce by expanding and sustaining recovery resources to meet growing needs
- Securing funding and ensure access to essential services for individuals and families affected by SUD
- Emphasizing the importance of protecting individual rights and advocating for safeguards for those on the journey to recovery
Stay tuned for updates on how Nexus and its supporters are working to create a brighter future for all Texans affected by substance use disorders. Together, we can make a meaningful difference!

Nexus Receives Grant from CBS 11 and Tom Thumb/Albertsons Foundation
This holiday season, CBS-11 News Texas, Tom Thumb, Albertsons, and the Dallas Cowboys teamed up to spotlight nonprofits making a year-round difference through their “11 Days of Giving” campaign. As part of the initiative, Nexus was awarded a $1,000 grant from the Tom Thumb/Albertsons Foundation.
Heather Ormand, CEO of Nexus and a proud advocate for recovery, shared her gratitude for the recognition and donation. “$1,000 can pay for a family to be here for two to three days,” she said. “This could be a family’s Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at Nexus. We appreciate it so much.”
Ormand, who has been sober for 14 years, knows the struggles of substance use disorder firsthand and uses her journey to inspire others. “I knew I wanted a family one day, and that motivated me to seek sobriety and better myself,” Heather explains. Now, as CEO, she leads a dedicated team—many of whom are program alumni—focused on helping women heal and rebuild their lives.
Nexus is unique among recovery centers in Texas, offering a family-centered approach that allows women to bring their children with them during treatment. Serving around 100 adults and 25 children daily, Nexus relies heavily on community support to fund its transformative programs, with 35% of its operating budget coming from private fundraising.
For outreach coordinator and program alumna Brenda Hewitt, the impact of Nexus is deeply personal. “This is where I started my life,” Brenda says. “Nexus saved my life.”
The $1,000 grant will directly support Nexus’ mission to provide hope, healing, and opportunities for women and families impacted by substance use disorders.

A Story of Resilience and Renewal: Angelia Wilson’s Journey to Recovery
Angelia’s life is a testament to the transformative power of second chances and the unwavering support of a community dedicated to recovery. Angelia has been sober since November 2, 2022—a milestone she cherishes after a long battle with substance use disorder.
Angelia’s journey with Nexus Family Recovery Center began eight years ago when a CPS caseworker introduced her to the program. Her initial stay at Nexus lasted just three weeks, and upon returning to the same environment, she experienced a relapse. When Angelia had her son, she made the life-altering decision to return to Nexus, knowing it was her path to building a better life for herself and her children.
Her second stay at Nexus was profoundly different. Nexus welcomed her with open arms. Through the PPWC (Pregnant and Parenting Women with Children) program, Angelia worked diligently to reunite with her son and rebuild her life. Nexus taught her coping skills, such as reading to manage triggers, and offered her a safe, distraction-free environment. “Nexus is a sisterhood,” Angelia shared. “No men here meant I could focus on myself, and that made all the difference.”
With guidance from counselors, Angelia learned to humble herself, practice patience, and embrace stillness. She credits Nexus for showing her she could change her story and find a way out of the “insanity” she had been living in.
Today, Angelia is thriving. She works at Fairfield Hotel, where she handles front desk responsibilities. She has rekindled relationships with her five children and her mother, spending weekends with them, enjoying activities like bowling, drawing, and attending church. She also holds a leadership position as Vice Chair of her Oxford House chapter in North Texas, helping others navigate sober living.
Angelia’s future is filled with hope and ambition. She dreams of furthering her education, advancing professionally, and inspiring other women in recovery. “I want to motivate others and give them hope. Nexus showed me I could change my life, and I want to share that with others,” she said.
Her gratitude for Nexus and its supporters is immeasurable. “You’ve helped save my life, get my kids back, and rebuild my family. Nexus built me up when I was broken. It means so much to me.”
Angelia’s story reminds us that recovery is possible with the right support and determination. As a voice of inspiration, she embodies the mission of Nexus—a community of hope and resilience for women and their families.
