Dallas Fire Department and Sparky the Fire Dog Visit Nexus for Fire Safety Program
The Nexus Child Development Center (CDC) recently welcomed the Dallas Fire Department and their beloved mascot, Sparky the Fire Dog, for a fun and educational fire safety program. Designed to engage children in a lively, interactive way, the program covered essential fire prevention topics such as home fire drills, designating a family meeting place, smoke detectors, calling 911, and the importance of “Stop, Drop, and Roll.”
The Dallas Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Officer led the session, ensuring children learned life-saving fire safety skills in an entertaining and memorable way. Through hands-on demonstrations and the animated presence of Sparky the Fire Dog puppet, the young attendees absorbed critical information about staying safe in the event of a fire emergency.
The Nexus Child Development Center (CDC) serves as a vital resource for families, providing licensed childcare for infants through school-aged children. By offering services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and childcare assistance, the CDC supports mothers in recovery, allowing them to focus on healing while ensuring their children receive high-quality care.
Events like this reinforce Nexus’ commitment to fostering a safe, supportive environment where families can grow, learn, and recover together.

A Story of Hope: Shannon’s Journey with Nexus
Shannon, now 41 years old, has been sober for nearly seven years. Her path to recovery was not a straight line, but through perseverance, support, and a commitment to change, she reclaimed her life and her family’s future.
Growing up in Washington State, Shannon had a loving mother but faced challenges with an alcoholic stepfather. She started drinking at 14 to fit in, which led to a cycle of substance use disorder that impacted her family. Her turning point came when Child Protective Services (CPS) took her daughter away, prompting her to seek treatment. She entered Nexus several times, including stays with her daughter, before fully embracing the tools and community that would change her life.
“Nexus allowed us to escape the insanity that our lives had become,” Shannon reflects. “They taught me how to be a better mother and gave me the skills to cope with life.”
One of the most impactful aspects of her journey was the women-only treatment environment, which allowed her to focus and heal. Nexus never turned her away, welcoming her each time she was ready to try again. Eventually, Shannon made the life-changing decision to separate herself from the people and lifestyle that kept her stuck.
Today, Shannon is thriving. She is married to a man in long-term recovery, and her daughter is pursuing higher education at TWU in Denton. As the Executive Director of Grace Matters Here Inc., she dedicates her life to helping others find recovery, housing, and stability. “My dream is to create recovery houses where women can safely rebuild their lives,” Shannon shares.
Her advice to others struggling? Keep asking for help. “Put both feet in and grasp onto the new life in front of you. You are worthy of so much more.”
To Nexus donors, Shannon extends her deepest gratitude: “Your donation is changing the future. You’re making it possible for women to rebuild their lives and give their children a better tomorrow.”
