This month at Nexus Recovery Center, we spotlight 2024 Brunch Chair Rachel Stacy and thank UT Health San Antonio for donating more than 5,000 doses of Narcan to Nexus. We also highlight former client Paula, who found a welcoming and supportive place at Nexus. Finally, we invite you to come tour the Nexus campus at one of our monthly tours!

Nexus Receives 5,000 Doses of Narcan
Last month, Nexus received two pallets of Narcan from UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) School of Nursing, containing more than 5,000 doses. Narcan is a form of the medication naloxone that’s used to reverse an opioid overdose. This life-saving medication will help Nexus prevent deaths in the ongoing opioid epidemic and get more people struggling with opioid use disorder into recovery.
UTHSA School of Nursing distributes Narcan to organizations such as Nexus through the Texas Targeted Opioid Response (TTOR) program, an initiative from Texas Health and Human Services (HHS). Because Narcan is so effective at harm-reduction, the medication is free to anyone in Texas who requests it through the TTOR website MoreNarcanPlease.com.
This program is funded by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), a federal agency within the United States Department of Health and Human Services that makes substance use and mental disorder information, services and research more accessible. Nexus is grateful to UTHSA, TTOR, and SAMHSA for granting us this effective tool we need to counter the opioid epidemic.

Paula Finds a Welcoming and Supportive Place
Paula B. is a 30-year-old mother who has been in recovery for five months. Before coming to Nexus Recovery Center, Paula says that her life was very chaotic and unhealthy due to homelessness. When she and her daughter arrived at Nexus, they had nothing but the clothes on their backs, but thanks to Nexus’ partnership with Trusted World, our staff were able to get them the clothes they needed to start their recovery journey.
“My time at Nexus was amazing from the start,” says Paula. “Everyone was so welcoming. The staff care so much about us and our recovery.”
Paula’s case manager helped her get her driver’s license, set up doctors’ appointments for her daughter, and helped Paula get birth control before she left. Paula loved the classes she took, especially the parenting class, which she says helped her become a better, healthier parent to her kids.
Without Nexus, Paula says that she would still be doing the same unhealthy things she was doing before. Nexus staff told Paula about coping mechanisms that she can use to be able to deal and live with depression. Paula says that Nexus taught her how to be a better parent and a better version of herself. She loves that so many Nexus staff are in recovery as well, which makes it easier for her to open up and talk to them.
Since completing residential treatment at Nexus, Paula has moved on to our Intensive Outpatient (IOP) program. Her future plans are to buy a house with her significant other and continue on her recovery journey.
“If you’re struggling, go to Nexus,” Paula says. “I wouldn’t have chosen anywhere else to go and start my recovery. Nexus is amazing and everyone is so supportive there.”

Rachel Stacy Chairs 2024 Mothers’ Brunch & Bazaar
We are proud to announce that Rachel Stacy will be the Chair of the 3rd Annual Mothers’ Brunch & Bazaar! Rachel is a hard-touring, Texas-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, who has been in recovery for 11 years. Mentored by Texas/Americana icon Ray Wylie Hubbard, Rachel uses her music and voice as a beacon of hope rather than dwelling on the past.
“My goal now is to try to inspire other people — especially women — to continue in their endeavors with music and art. My mission is all about wanting to be a good example: not just for younger artists just starting, but for ones at that age — my age —where society might be telling them, ‘You’re too old for this, you need to quit.’ Because no, you don’t.”
Hosted by the Auxiliary of Nexus, the 3rd Annual Mothers’ Brunch & Bazaar will be held on Monday, April 15, 2024 from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Dallas Country Club. Come ready to shop for your favorite women in your lives. You will be able to purchase all your Mother’s Day presents at the bazaar before and after brunch, from gorgeous fine jewelry to designer popcorn and everything in between! Brunch includes a delectable spread of fine foods, a raffle with fabulous prizes, and moving stories of recovery.
All proceeds will support Nexus Recovery Center and ensure that mothers with substance use disorders can receive needed services to rebuild their lives and heal alongside their children. Nexus is thankful to have Rachel Stacy and so many other talented women in recovery join us as we celebrate mothers and all of the women in our lives. Click the button below to join us today!
