July 2022

This month at Nexus Recovery Center, we are thrilled to celebrate the successes that Nexus alum Robin Williams has achieved thanks to her recovery. We are also happy to welcome our new Director of Nursing, Jami Miller, and update you on our clients’ recent field trip to a dance performance courtesy of Bruce Wood Dance. Finally, we invite you to join us next month at our Pathways to Possibilities Luncheon.

Nexus Welcomes Jami Miller as Director of Nursing

We are excited to welcome Jami Miller, MSN, RN, to our staff as the new Director of Nursing. Jami has been a nurse for over 25 years and began her career at Amarillo College as a licensed vocational nurse in 1998. She received an associate degree in nursing in 2008 and graduated with a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2021. She has served on several committees, including as co-chair of a Security & Safety hospital-based committee, a Suicide Prevention advisory and research for adults and children community committee as well as the Panhandle Behavioral Health Alliance.

In her role at Nexus, Nurse Jami supervises all medication room and detoxification services for clients admitted to this level of care, as well as medication room staff, interns and detox nurses, detox assistants, and the medication-assisted treatment (MAT) coordinator. She coordinates medical and psychiatric services for residential clients, and manages and implements infection control policies, processes, tracking and reporting. She also assists in the management of the MAT program and performs nursing specific duties, as required.

“Being able to answer clients’ medical questions and provide the needed education has been the most valuable experience I have encountered with this population,” says Nurse Jami. “Helping them understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the effect it has on themselves, their children and loved ones is unmeasurable.”

Bruce Wood Dance Entertains Nexus Clients

Last month, Nexus clients were treated to an amazing modern dance performance courtesy of Bruce Wood Dance at Moody Performance Hall downtown. Through its Tina Brown Education Outreach program, Bruce Wood Dance partners with Nexus to provide dance lessons as well as complimentary tickets to mainstage shows. Thank you to Bruce Wood Dance for presenting our clients with high-caliber, contemporary choreography that harnesses the power of dance to entertain, enrich, and heal.

Dignity

Robin Williams

This month, we would like to feature Nexus alum Robin Williams. When Robin first came to Nexus, she was struggling with not only substance use, but also a stable home life for her three children. As such, Robin was enrolled into our Nexus Generations program, where she could participate in several hours of parenting education per week and attend support groups to help in her recovery journey.

Along the way, Robin’s recovery coach, Amber, worked with her to find the resources she needed. Amber connected Robin to Family Gateway to help her find affordable housing for her family. While Robin waited for her new home, she often stopped by the Nexus Generations office for additional resources and support. Finally, after several months of work, Robin got approved for a 4-bedroom apartment in south Dallas, where her children can have space to grow. Robin now works a bus monitor, and credits Nexus to helping her build a stable future for her children.
